Self-Portraits
The other day on the spur of the moment I decided to update my head shots. My 60D has a handy swivel screen that makes taking self-portraits much easier - with my remote, it was only slightly more difficult than taking pictures of someone else. But not as fun. :-)

DeleteLovely, Kathryn! You do much better with self-portraits than I do--even with the remote! =P Hey, I had a few questions for you... I will be doing a shoot with some siblings (all five kids are under 13) sometime in October and I was wondering if you had any thoughts on what time I should set it up? 5:00PM maybe? {I'm wanting golden hour, but need enough time for pics of the kids as a group and individually =)} Also was wondering if you have any tips on doing a sibling shoot in general, and how to make things fun for them (I loved the results of your Power kids shoot)?

Liz - Oh, how fun! My shoot with the Powers took about an hour and a half (maybe a little more)... but I also had twice the people you will be dealing with. :-) I didn't do individual shots though. So you may want to allow for 1 1/2 to 2 hours just to be safe if you have never done group shots before. Shoot as close to sunset as you possibly can. I shot a little earlier than I would have liked in hindsight, because I had no idea what to expect and how long it would take (that was my first group shoot too). When you get a little closer to the date, if you go on weather.com you can type in your zip code, and then go to the 10 day forecast you can see exactly what time the sun sets on a particular day and it's pretty accurate. You can still shoot for a little bit after the sun has actually dipped below the horizon, but not that long... so I would time it as 10-15 minutes past sunset and back it up 2 hours for the start time. Make sense?
DeleteAs far as doing the shoot in general... I planned out the poses I wanted to do ahead of time and wrote it down so I wouldn't miss anything. Fun shots are the ones where they are doing something - like the walking pictures, etc. Just talking through the shoot makes it more interesting and not boring, "Ok, Sally, move in a little bit - PERFECT! *snap, snap, snap* I love it, this looks great!" etc. Another trick is if you think their smiles are getting tired, have them all close their eyes and make a scrunchy face, and when you count to three, they all open their eyes and smile. You have to be ready to shoot when they open their eyes but you'll get fresh smiles.
